Informational interviews are a great way to connect with professionals to learn about industries you may want to pursue. This is one of the best ways to gather information on the requirements, rewards, and even day-to-day responsibilities of working in a specific industry or corporation from someone on the inside.
To initiate an informational interview, contact the professional by e-mail or phone and ask if you can meet with them and learn more about what it’s like to work in their occupation. Set a meeting time and place that is convenient for them (meeting at their work is always a plus). Prior to your meeting, research the company and develop some questions that you would like to ask (check out the Informational Interview Quick Tip for some suggestions). Be sure and send a thank you note within 24 hours of your meeting.
