Anteater Career Essentials (ACE) is an online course available through Canvas that helps UC Irvine undergraduate students develop the skills, confidence, and strategies needed to navigate today’s job market and prepare for future career opportunities.

Developed by the UC Irvine Division of Career Pathways, this self-paced online course provides practical tools, interactive activities, and AI-supported resources to help students explore career paths, build professional materials, and prepare for internships and full-time employment.

Course Details

Format: Online, asynchronous

Availability: September 21, 2026 – September 10, 2027

Eligible for: UC Irvine undergraduate students at any stage of their career journey. Students may be exploring career interests, preparing for internships, beginning their career search, or preparing for full-time employment. No prior career development experience is required.

This course provides undergraduate students with practical career development skills that can be applied throughout college and beyond. From career exploration to accepting a job offer, the course equips students with the tools needed to navigate each stage of the career journey.

Students who successfully complete ACE can earn the Job Search Fundamentals digital credential. ACE is a non-credit course and does not appear on students’ academic transcripts.

Why Participate?

Today's employers expect more than a degree. They want candidates who can communicate effectively, demonstrate professionalism, build relationships, and confidently navigate the hiring process.

ACE helps address this need. Students will develop these essential career skills through discovering career paths to negotiating your first job offer.

By the end of the course, students will have created professional career materials, expanded their network, strengthened their interviewing skills, and developed a personalized job search strategy.

Student Outcomes

Following completion of ACE, students reported improvements in several areas.

  • Resume writing confidence: 41% → 86%

Course Curriculum

ACE consists of six self-paced modules that guide students through every stage of the career development process.

Module 1: Self-Assessment & Career Direction

Students begin by exploring their interests, strengths, values, and career goals to establish a strong foundation for career decision-making. This module introduces career exploration strategies and resources that support informed academic and professional planning.

  • Major and career exploration
  • Informational interviewing
  • Career planning
  • AI-supported reflection

Module 2: Professional Branding

Students develop professional marketing materials that communicate their skills, experiences, and accomplishments to employers across multiple platforms.

Topics include:

  • Resume development
  • Cover letters
  • LinkedIn profiles
  • Handshake profiles
  • Professional online presence

Module 3: Networking & Interviewing

This module focuses on building professional relationships and developing the communication skills needed to navigate networking opportunities and interviews with confidence.

Topics include:

  • Networking strategies
  • Career fair preparation
  • Elevator pitches
  • Behavioral interviewing
  • Professional follow-up
  • AI-supported interview practice

Module 4: Company & Industry Research

Students learn how to research employers, industries, and career pathways to make informed decisions and prepare for internships and employment opportunities.

Topics include:

  • Employer research
  • Company culture
  • Industry and career pathway exploration
  • Identifying key decision-makers
  • Interview preparation through strategic research

Module 5: Strategic Job Search

Students develop an organized and effective approach to identifying opportunities, building a job search plan, and navigating today's evolving employment landscape.

Topics include:

  • Job search planning
  • Internship and employment resources
  • The hidden job market
  • Skills-based hiring
  • Networking strategies
  • Responsible use of generative AI throughout the job search

Module 6: Evaluating Job Offers

The final module prepares students to assess employment offers and make informed career decisions with confidence and professionalism.

Topics include:

  • Compensation and salary research
  • Benefits evaluation
  • Negotiation strategies
  • Managing multiple offers
  • Professional acceptance and decline of offers

Earn a Digital Credential

Students who successfully complete ACE can earn the Job Search Fundamentals digital credential.

To earn the credential, students must:

  • Complete the course assessment with a score of 80% or higher
  • Earn a Bronze rating or higher on a resume submitted through Big Resume AI
  • Submit a career reflection summarizing key takeaways and next steps
