The Job Shadow Program pairs students with professionals in Orange County, Los Angeles, and beyond for an opportunity to spend one day in the workplace during Spring Break.
This involves shadowing a professional through a normal day’s activities and may include informational interviews, a tour of the facility, and participation in actual office projects. This experience is a great way for students to get an insider’s view of a position and an organization while gaining professional skills to get career ready and expanding their network.
The UCI Job Shadow Program is not a paid experience. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the host site as well as their lunch during the Job Shadow Program.

“Researching a company does not compare with the opportunity to live it for a day! I was able to have one-on-ones with their professional staff and with a group of staff members throughout the day who shared their experiences as college students and how they entered their current field of work. At UCI Extension I was able to experience their company culture first hand! This opportunity definitely opened the door to my desire to pursue a career in Human Resources preferably for academia.”

“I participated in the job shadowing program with the mobile and web development agency, Codazen. By shadowing their developers for the day, I was able to see how what I’ve learned in classes at UCI directly connects with the skills used in the everyday work life. On top of that, they were warm, inviting, and proved as mini mentors for the day by allowing me to ask questions ranging from all the good and bad things they encounter. Luckily for me, a few of the people I shadowed were recent graduates and talked about their career paths and how they ended up with Codazen. Overall it was an amazing experience that allowed me to narrow in on what I want to do after I graduate from UCI and boosted my confidence in searching for jobs.”

“The Job Shadow Program by the Career Center was a great opportunity for me to learn more about Niagara Bottling, LLC as well as the many duties and responsibilities of a tax manager. During the short amount of time, my job shadow host assigned me a mini-task to gain hands on experience, complementing my understanding of the job function. My favorite part though was being treated out to lunch with her fellow co-workers because I could observe the diverse personalities and backgrounds hired by Niagara as well as have fun getting to know each other more in an informal setting. At the end of the day, I had a great time with my job shadow host and I encourage others to try out job shadowing to gain a realistic view of the work environment and job function!”
